Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

The fragment preserves fragmentary descriptions of precious cult images; one of them is said to be decorated with eight sun disks of silver (obv. 3′). Most relevant is the description of a statuette of the goddess Anzili (obv. 8′-9′ff., see Güterbock 1983: 210).

Palaeography: Late DI (rev. 9′!).

obv. 4′: The karnaši/a- was an object on which things could be placed, see Klinger 1996: 448 for discussion.

obv. 11′-12′: On the NUNUZ stone see Polvani 1988: 149-59.

rev. 6′: A rare reference to a horse which is “set up,” as part of a cult image. Cf. KUB 38.4 and see CHD P 208 for the tentative restoration of ALAM.

rev. 7′: Note the unusual detail of a silver axe (AL KÙ.BABBAR) held by the deity.
